Damien obtained his PhD in colloidal chemistry at the University of Sheffield in 2008. After a couple of industrial Post-Doc, he joined the Biomaterials Unit at CIDETEC in 2011 as senior researcher developing a new research line on Smart Colloids & Hydrogels. In 2016, Damien took the lead of the Biomaterials Unit. The research group is currently of 17 members who work on 4 research lines: smart colloids for drug delivery, dynamics hydrogel, biomaterials and translation of nanopharmaceuticals to GMP production. Those technologies are clearly focussed in 4 different markets: pharmaceutical, medical device, dermo-cosmetics and tissue engineering.
The objective of his research is to develop new technology and to bring them to commercialization. In that sense, Damien is co-inventor of 5 patents, 2 of them licensed. He has participated to the creation of 2 spin-off companies KUSUDAMA Therapeutics S.L and EMISSARY COSMETICS S.L., being part of the scientific board of the latter. In addition to industrial projects, Damien has been participating in several EU project (PARYLENS, NANOPILOT, PeptiCaps, PneumoNP, RISKGONE, RESTORE, TB-MED, MDOT, EXPERT) and project funded by the Basque government (5 ELKATEKs and 1 PIBA). Damien has published more than 50 papers (h index 24) and participated to more than 100 conference (> 50 oral, 10 invited).
